6 But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.1

14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.
15 So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate.2

3. The Nicolaitanes had as a teacher Nicolas, one of the seven who were the first to be ordained deacons by the apostles. They lived unbridled lives. What sort of people they are is fully exposed by the Apocalypse of John, for they assert that there is no difference between committing fornication and to eating food sacrificed to idols. For that reason the Word also spoke this of them: Yet this you have, you hate the works of the Nicolaitanes, which I also hate.3
