  1. Great Pyramid
    1. Initiantion

Vertical section, looking West, of the Great Pyramid.

Hence the Third Degree is that of mystical death, of which bodily death is taken as figurative, just as bodily birth is taken in the First Degree as figurative of entrance upon the path of regeneration. In all the Mystery-systems of the past will be found this degree of mystical death as an outstanding and essential feature prior to the final stage of perfection or regeneration. As an illustration one has only to refer to a sectional diagram of the Great Pyramid of Egypt, which was so constructed as to be not merely a temple of initiation, but to record in permanent form the principles upon which regeneration is attainable. Its entrance passage extends for some distance into the building as a narrow ascending channel through which the postulant who desires to reach the centre must creep in no small discomfort and restrictedness. This was to emblematise the discipline and up-hill labour of self-purification requisite in the Apprentice Degree. At a certain point this restricted passage opens out into a long and lofty gallery, still upon a steeply rising gradient, up which the postulant had to pass, but in a condition of ease and liberty. This was to symbolize the condition of illumination and expanded intellectual liberty associated with the Fellow-craft Degree. It ended at a place where the candidate once more had to force his way on hands and knees through the smallest aperture of all, one that led to the central chamber in which stood and still stands the great sarcophagus in which he was placed and underwent the last supreme ordeal, and whence he was raised from the dead, initiated and perfected.1

    1. 'empty sarcophagus' vs. 'bottomless pit'

The empty sarcophagus [pictured left]. The 'bottomless pit' [pictured right].

10. (Q) What is the significance of the empty sarcophagus?
(A) That there will be no more death. Don't misunderstand or misinterpret! but the INTERPRETATION of death will be made plain. (5748-6)

6. (Q) Will my wife precede me in death and will I be able to foretell my own death as given in the prophecy?
(A) Even as thine earthly brother gave, "I go up to be bound of those that know not what they do" - even so will self be able to know within self that which is to take place in material planes. Be not overcome by much knowledge. Be not overdone nor undone by that as may be given. Remember, mine son, that thou saidst of him who DID wage war - even with Him - concerning the body of Moses, whom thou may even direct - that though he recognized his power, yet railed he not - but said, "God will deal with thee." Not of thine OWN power may these forces be done - but flesh and blood may manifest a spiritual truth, but may not ORDER a spirit in ANY direction! Aid and succor may come THROUGH flesh and blood, even to those near the pit - yet there is fixed that impassable gulf, and he that makes his will one WITH the FATHER may be committed a care through His direction. Keep that as is given, my son, and err not in well-doing; for oft, as has been said, those that call upon the forces only in distress may be heard from afar. Keep thine self CLOSE, that those that would direct may be ever near thee - for the stumbling block ALWAYS lies in self-aggrandizement of power and ability stored in one's own self, in the misuse of self in relation one to another. Keep the faith, My Son - Keep the faith - (137-118)

6. For, we are joint heirs with that universal force we call God - if we seek to do His biddings. If our purposes are not in keeping with that Creative Force, or God, then we may be a hindrance. And, as it has been indicated of old, it has not appeared nor even entered into the heart of man to know the glories the Father has prepared for those that love Him. Neither may men conceive of destruction, even though he is in the earth a three-dimensional awareness. Neither may he conceive of horror, nor of suffering, nor even of what it means to be in outer darkness where the worm dieth not.2 (5755-2)

To many this seems a hard saying: Deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Jesus.
But it will be much harder to hear that last word: Depart from Me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire.3 4

  1. Mark 9:43-48
43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
46 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
47 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:
48 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

  1. Matthew 25:41
41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
